Overview

The Bachelor of Business in Convention and Event Management positions graduates at the centre of the fast growing events industry. Students acquire the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in the management, planning and marketing of corporate events, conventions and meetings, festivals and special events.

This course offers an optional international exchange program for second year students to study in the United States, Canada, England, Austria, the Netherlands or Hong Kong.

An internship program, which counts as four units of the degree, provides students in their final study session with a block of practical workplace experience in a hospitality, event or tourism organisation in Australia or overseas. Students also have the option to undertake a research-based project.

While there are no majors in this course, it offers industry-specific topics developed in consultation with industry and academic leaders in their field. These include theming and staging; events management; hazard, facility and risk management; project planning and management; and conventions, meetings and exhibition management.

Entry requirements

Credit for prior learning

  1. Candidates who have successfully completed the requirements of the Associate Degree of Business in Convention and Event Management at this University, may be granted advanced standing for up to sixteen (16) units towards the Bachelor of Business in Convention and Event Management.
  2. The School Board may grant advanced standing of up to sixteen (16) units, provided that:
    1. a maximum of four (4) units are counted towards Intern Study; and
    2. a maximum of twelve (12) units are counted towards units other than Intern Study.
  3. Advanced Standing of up to eight (8) units may be granted to candidates who have completed another undergraduate award of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. In addition, a candidate may apply to the Head of School to substitute other units for those previously completed. Unit substitution does not reduce the number of units required to complete the course. Advanced Standing in excess of eight (8) units may be granted by the Head of School in exceptional circumstances.
     

Course requirements

  1. To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Business in Convention and Event Management, a candidate shall successfully complete twenty-four (24) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units (First year core units);
    2. all units listed in Part B of the Schedule (Second and Third year core units); and
    3. Either all units listed in Part C (excluding EXE00221–4) or
      EXE00221–4 plus four (4) other units listed in Part C.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Associate Degree of Business in Convention and Event Management a candidate shall successfully complete sixteen (16) units comprising:
    1. all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules; and
    2. eight (8) units from either Part B and/or Part C of the Schedule.

International Exchange Program

Candidates permitted to participate in a one session exchange program at an approved partner university overseas shall:

  1. undertake units at the partner university which have been approved by the School Board;
  2. successfully complete four (4) units of a full time student load at the partner university in order to receive a maximum of four (4) units recorded as “Satisfied Requirements” at Southern Cross University; and
  3. abide by the rules and conditions of the partner university and the exchange agreement.

Intern Study MKT01221–4 may be taken either throughout the course during times when other units are not scheduled, or over a 20-week (600 hours) period after the completion of 19 units. All internship placements must be approved by the Internship Coordinator prior to commencement.
