Overview
The Bachelor of Arts enables students to pursue areas about which they are passionate while gaining relevant, transferrable and valuable career skills for life. The course promotes cultural awareness, critical thinking, community engagement, problem-solving and creative practices. It provides the scope to build strong intellectual capabilities and a broad knowledge of the liberal arts as well as a deepened understanding through the study of majors.
Students can also elect to undertake a professional placement to gain experience in the workplace and to establish professional contacts. They may also exit the program with an Associate Degree of Creative Writing, following successful completion of 16 required units.

Professional placement provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in the workplace and to establish contacts. In the Bachelor of Arts, students can undertake learning opportunities in the community through a number of units as well as through assessment opportunities.

The majors available in humanities and social sciences provide an overview of the humanities (or study of the human condition) and the study of human society and social relationships which contribute to the advancement of human understanding. These majors include:

Majors in creative arts provide opportunities for students to develop practical or theoretical understandings of creativity in:

Majors are in the secondary school teaching areas for students interested in pursuing further studies to become teachers. Students can combine the following majors with a major in Education (L and O):

Students who choose a major in the secondary school teaching areas and hope to progress to the SCU Master of Teaching (which they would need to complete to become teachers) need to choose very specific majors to qualify for entry into the Masters degree and should contact the University for further advice. Students who specifically want to become teachers should apply for one of SCU’s combined education degrees.
The opportunity to combine traditional arts subjects with majors in sciences allows people to pursue their passions across disciplines in:
- Environmental Studies – L

- Human Geography – L
- Mathematics – L
Other vocationally-oriented majors could be combined with studies in the arts. These majors include:
- Law and Justice Studies – L and O

Minors
Four units from any of the majors can be taken as a minor. Additional minors in a range of subject areas are also available to provide further opportunity for specialisation in: Curatorial Studies, Event Studies, Food Studies, Healthy Childhood Studies, Sound Production, Welfare State Studies and Human Geography.

Entry requirements
Credit for prior learning
Candidates who completed an Associate Degree of Creative Writing or the Associate Degree of Arts may be granted advanced standing for up to sixteen (16) units towards the Bachelor of Arts.
Where a student has completed multiple awards of the same level below AQF level 7, only one will be assessed for Advanced Standing.
Course requirements

To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Arts degree a candidate shall successfully complete not less than twenty-four (24) units (288 credit points) comprising:
- all units listed in Part A; and
- at least one of the eight (8) unit majors and two of the four (4) unit minors from Part B and four (4) electives; or
- two of the eight (8) unit majors and one four (4) unit minor or four (4) electives from Part B; or
- at least one of the eight (8) unit majors one four (4) unit minor from Part B and eight (8) electives
- No unit will be credited to more than one major.
- A maximum of ten (10) Introductory level units and a minimum of six (6) Advanced level units should be completed.

To be eligible for the award of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing a candidate shall successfully complete not less than sixteen (16) units (192 credit points) comprising:
- all units listed in Part A of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing; and
- eight (8) units of study from Part B of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing; and
- three (3) units from Part C of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing
- A candidate who while enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts has completed the requirements of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing may elect to be awarded the Associate Degree of Creative Writing following withdrawal from candidature from the Bachelor of Arts.

To be eligible for the Associate Degree of Arts a candidate shall successfully complete not less than sixteen (16) units (192 credit points) comprising:
- all units listed in Part A; and
- one of the eight (8) units majors from Part B; or
- two of the four (4) unit minors from Part B; and
- four (4) electives.
- A candidate who while enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts has completed the requirements of the Associate Degree of Arts may elect to be awarded the Associate Degree of Arts following withdrawal from candidature from the Bachelor of Arts.

To be eligible for the award of Diploma of Arts a candidate shall successfully complete eight (8) units (96 credit points) comprising:
- all four (4) units listed in Part A; and
- any four (4) units listed in Part B
- A candidate in the Bachelor of Arts who has completed the requirements for the Diploma of Arts may elect to be awarded the Diploma of Arts following withdrawal from candidature from the Bachelor of Arts.
