Unit description

Part 1 of 2 units comprising the first social work field placement. Engages students in 400 hours (across SWRK5005 and SWRK5006) of supervised social work practice in a human service organisation developing professional skills, knowledge and values in line with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units to practice in a real organisation.

Unit content

Topic 1: Analysing the agency context
Topic 2: Forming and maintaining ethical and professional relationships with clients, colleagues and others
Topic 3: Communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders from diverse populations
Topic 4: Understanding the role of social workers within the organisation
Topic 5: Understanding the range of social work practice and application of theory within this setting
Topic 6: Making effective use of professional supervision
Topic 7: Understanding and developing evidence based social work practice relevant to the setting

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation

demonstrate effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders

analyse the organisation, its location within wider social systems and its relationship with other organisations, such as auspicing bodies and funding agencies

analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation

make use of professional supervision to increase their learning about social work practice.
