Overview

The Master of Childhood and Youth Studies is designed to meet the needs of people working, or intending to work, with children, young people and their families. Students can also study a Graduate Certificate (4 units) instead of the Masters degree.

The course aims to develop the knowledge and skills of professionals, enabling them to respond more effectively to the issues that impact children, young people and families across a diverse range of contexts. It incorporates the latest research and explores the ways that children, childhood and youth are conceptualised within family, community and international settings, including the theories, policies and practices that can inform professional practice. Participants benefit from the opportunity to apply their learning immediately in the workplace.

Candidates can choose to enrol in the four-unit Graduate Certificate or sixteen-unit Masters or can enrol in single units as accredited professional development. Significant advanced standing (or credit) is available for those with relevant previous learning and expertise. It is also possible to exit the course with a Graduate Diploma following completion of eight specified units (direct enrolment into the Graduate Diploma is not available).

Course requirements

  1. To be eligible for the award of Master of Childhood and Youth Studies a candidate shall successfully complete not less than sixteen (16) units comprising:
    1. All units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
    2. All units from Part B of the Schedule;
    3. Six (6) units from Part C of the Schedule; and
    4. All units from Part D of the Schedule.
    5. Notwithstanding Course Requirement Rule (a)(iii), the Course Coordinator may approve the substitution of up to four (4) relevant postgraduate coursework units, from elsewhere in the University’s offerings, for those in Part C of the Schedule.
  2. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma of Childhood and Youth Studies a candidate shall successfully complete not less than eight (8) units comprising:
    1. All units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
    2. Six (6) units from Part B or C of the Schedule.
    3. Notwithstanding Course Requirement Rule (b)(ii), the Course Coordinator may approve the substitution of up to two (2) relevant postgraduate coursework units, from elsewhere in the University’s offerings, for those in Part C of the Schedule.
  3. To be eligible for the award of Graduate Certificate of Childhood and Youth Studies a candidate shall successfully complete not less than four (4) units comprising:
    1. All units from Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules;
    2. Two units from Part B of the Schedule;
  4. A candidate who while enrolled for the Master of Childhood and Youth Studies has completed the requirements of the Graduate Diploma of Childhood and Youth Studies may elect to be awarded the Graduate Diploma following withdrawal from candidature for the Master’s award.
  5. A candidate who while enrolled for the Master of Childhood and Youth Studies has completed the requirements of the Graduate Certificate of Childhood and Youth Studies may elect to be awarded the Graduate Certificate following withdrawal from candidature for the Master’s award.

Entry requirements

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this course are as follows
