Unit description

Provides an in-depth and critical understanding of the issues and processes involved in conducting research with and for children and young people. Focuses on ethical issues and the efficacy of a range of data collection and analysis methods including those promoting active participation of children and young people. Students will develop a research proposal for a small scale study focused on children and young people.

Unit content

Module 1 - Research with and for children and young people: Theoretical perspectives and contemporary practices History, traditions and politics of research related to children and young people The ethics of researching with, and for, children and young people Researcher roles and participatory research practices Children and young people as researchers.

Module 2 - Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research: Foundations of practice Defining and understanding epistemology, theory, methodology and methods Exploring the diversity of research methodologies (particular focus on case study, ethnography, action research, grounded theory) Data collection and analysis techniques specific to research with children and young people.

Module 3 - Developing a research proposal Framing a research question The role of the literature search and review Choosing who will be involved Issues of access to sites Data collection Data analysis.
