Overview

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Laws prepares students as both exercise science professionals and as lawyers – developing skills across commercial and employment contracts, litigation, and tax and to work with sporting individuals or teams in areas of sport psychology, strength and conditioning, coaching or health promotion.

Students complete core units in law and exercise science. Although there are no majors in this course, students can specialise through the choice of a wide range of electives. This course offers a rare perspective on legal issues affecting professional athletes and associations – an understanding of the impact of player agreements, sponsorship agreements and the governance of professional sporting bodies.

Applicants who do not have the required entry mark are encouraged to apply for the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. If those students achieve the required grade point average during the course, they may then apply for transfer into the double degree.

Law students can undertake voluntary legal experience and professional placement with legal firms or offices, to complement their practical legal skills and become familiar with the issues facing working lawyers.

Students complete a 140-hour exercise science professional placement in the third year of the course. Placements might be in health and sporting centres, clubs, schools and academies or sport and recreation centres.

There are no majors in this double degree, however, a diverse range of law-based elective units is available.

Honours is embedded in the Bachelor of Laws degree and requires the completion of two specific Law units in addition to a high academic achievement overall. See course structure for details.

Career Outcomes

The Bachelor of Laws fulfils the academic requirements for admission to the legal profession, but professional admission authorities also require law graduates of all universities to complete practical legal training or similar to be eligible to practise as a lawyer.

Students who intend to practise law outside Australia should check with the relevant country’s admission body to confirm their practising requirements.

The Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science delivered from the Lismore campus is accredited by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) at the Exercise Science level. The course is also recognised by the National Strength and Conditioning Association of America. Subject to successful accreditation, all graduates, regardless of the major completed, will be eligible for full membership as Exercise Scientists with ESSA.

Graduates are also eligible for registration as an Exercise Professional with Fitness Australia and as a Level 1 Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association.

Course requirements

To be eligible to receive the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Laws, students must complete 40 units (480 credit points), comprising:

  • 35 core units (420 credit points); and
  • 5 Law electives (60 credit points).

Bachelor of Laws with Honours

To be eligible to receive the Bachelor of Laws with Honours, students must:

  • fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Laws; and
  • complete the units LAW10181 - Legal Research: Context, Perspective and Method and LAW00524 - Independent Legal Research; and
  • achieve a satisfactory standard of academic performance in law units as determined by the School Board, School of Law and Justice.

Class of Honours

The Bachelor of Laws with Honours may be awarded in the following classes:

  • First Class Honours;
  • Second Class Honours (Division I); or
  • Second Class Honours (Division II).
