Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology at Southern Cross University is designed to provide knowledge and skills required for students who wish to be employed in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry. The program focuses on the development of web-based business information systems. Students undertake studies in programming, systems analysis and design, multimedia development and usage, database development, networking and communications theory, computer security and technology management. 

Students also study issues confronting the ICT industry including employer obligations, employee rights, impacts on society, and future directions of the industry.

The University offers the ‘Women in Technology’ program which provides dedicated support for women entering this industry. Throughout the year, social events with a networking focus are held for female students. The program has a coordinator who acts as an advocate for the students, offering support and advice for women entering this industry.

Students can undertake optional internship units. Internship positions vary depending on each student's discipline area, placement firm size and industry. Recent roles undertaken by internship students include software quality assurance, coordinator, IT support officer, network support officer, software development and various other management and IT roles in private and government sectors. 

Information Systems: Students gain the skills needed to design, develop, implement and manage information systems and also provides students with a realistic understanding of the roles of information technology in organisations.

Software Development: Students develop the skills needed to efficiently develop and maintain high quality software systems and also provides students with the knowledge to participate in and manage software projects.

User experience: Gives students the skills needed to effectively and efficiently design and develop multimedia resources and interactive multimedia programs that support a great user experience. Students develop an ability to select and use multimedia resources that facilitate engagement and usability for users.

Additional majors: University-wide majors are also available in this course.

Unit availabilities are published for each study period and may vary from year to year. Sydney and Melbourne students can only study the Information Systems and Software Development majors.

Credit for prior learning

Candidates who have completed an Associate Degree of Information Technology or equivalent may be granted advanced standing for up to sixteen (16) units.

Course requirements

Requirements

To be awarded the Bachelor of Information Technology, students must complete 288 credit points comprising:

  1. all ten (10) core units; and
  2. one eight (8) unit major; and
  3. six (6) elective units

Exit Awards

Students can choose to exit with the Associate Degree of Information Technology if 16 units are completed and they meet the requirements of the Associate Degree.

Students must choose two advanced level units.

Note 2:

Internship A and Internship B are both double-weighted units requiring a 16 unit pre-requisite including the Professional Development for the Workplace unit (MNG10476). Please be aware of this double-weighting if you are restricted in the number of electives you can select in your major. All internship placements must be approved by the Work Integrated Learning Coordinator, prior to commencement.

Note 3:

MAT10251 is recommended for students who wish to enrol in the Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) after completing their degree.
