Unit aim

Examines the social construction of disability and theories of disablement. Introduces students to lived experiences of disability and the material, cultural and socio-political consequences of ableism and intersectionality. Critically analyses legislation, policy and practice in this field and promotes practices that  enable social justice and social inclusion..

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 analyse the diverse lived experiences of people who live with disability
2 define discrimination and discuss its impact on people who live a disability
3 analyse and apply theories of disablement
4 critically evaluate how legislation and policy influences the theoretical frameworks and practices used in community organisations
5 critically analyse practice in this field and recognise hallmarks of good practice.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
