Unit aim

Provides a critical understanding of policy and practice in prevention, child protection and out of home care. Issues of child abuse and neglect, including domestic violence, are analysed in relation to institutional initiatives in Australia. The role of critical analysis and critical self-reflection is framed against legal and policy considerations.

Unit content

Topic 1: Issues of Protection: what are they and why do we need to know about them?
Topic 2: Contemporary constructions of child abuse, family and domestic violence
Topic 3: Assessment approaches in child protection
Topic 4: The prevention/child protection/out of home care continuum
Topic 5: Therapeutic and culturally strong approaches to care
Topic 6: Managing ethical and organisational issues, managing self

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

3 analyse how issues of power, ethics and values impact and influence the delivery of services within the context of protection
4 use evidence based, reflective practice across the child protection and care continuum

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
