Unit aim
Introduces students to issues and challenges experienced by people with a disability from a personal, social and professional perspective. Examines theories of disability including social and medical models. Discusses and evaluates theoretical frameworks used within community settings; and the benefits and challenges of legislation and policy for good practice.

- Context of disability from an individual, social and professional perspective
- Issues and barriers faced by people who have a disability
Topic 2: From Theory to Practice
- Theories of disablement: social and medical models
- Ethics, risk assessment and paternalistic practice
- Social inclusion
- Social justice issues
Topic 3: Disability Politics
- Disability legislation and policy
- Implications of legislation and policy on practice
- Good practice: what is it and who decides?
Learning outcomes
