Unit aim

Builds on TCHR2001 - English: Secondary Curriculum and Pedagogy I to extend students’ understanding of secondary teaching in the key learning area of English. Introduces students to the teaching of English in years 11 and 12 (Stage 6). Students will reflect critically on contemporary perspectives of teaching of English in secondary schools.  Students will learn about the senior syllabus requirements, the development of a unit of work, the development of detailed lesson plans and the importance of effective assessment strategies. Students will develop their content knowledge for teaching  senior English as a specialisation subject and become familiar with evidenced-based teaching practices.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a broad and critical understanding of the concepts and content of Stage 6, including recent theory and research in the discipline, contemporary perspectives and issues, and cultural contexts of relevance
2 develop engaging units of work, lesson plans and resources related to selected theoretical and practical content of the Stage 6 English syllabus, demonstrating familiarity with the required syllabus outcomes, objectives, key competencies, knowledge, skills and understandings to develop effective teaching and learning activities to integrate literacy strategies
3 apply current pedagogical theory including the NSW DET Quality Teaching Framework to develop effective teaching and learning strategies that encourage students with a diversity of learning needs, styles, and cultural backgrounds to engage effectively with English in Stage 6 skills, as appropriate to the needs and expectations of the profession
4 identify and critically examine assessment and reporting procedures and strategies in the context of the Preliminary and HSC standards-referenced assessment framework. Demonstrate an understanding of how to assess students in Stage 6 English (assessment for, as, of Learning)
