Unit aim

Develops a critical understanding and application of the learning, education and development of infants and toddlers in the contexts of education and care. There is a focus on theory into pedagogical practices for children’s strengths, abilities and interests highlighting the significance of relationships and attachment, care routines and planning cycles for the learning and development of infants and toddlers. Partnerships with families from a range of histories and backgrounds are a focus. 

Unit content

Module 1: Understanding infant and toddler learning and development: The importance of the early years
 
Module 2: Theoretical and practical perspectives of pedagogy for infant and toddlers
 
Module 3: The planning cycle for the learning and development of infants and toddlers
 
Module 4: The learning environment
 
Module 5: Educator dispositions, attributes and capabilities for working with infants and toddlers
 
Module 6: Routines, health and safety 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 understand and apply theoretical perspectives of infant and toddler learning and development including contexts of infant and toddler Early Childhood Education and Care
2 critically reflect on the philosophies of learning and teaching for infants and toddlers in early childhood settings to develop your approach to working with infants and toddlers
3 demonstrate the ability to engage in the planning cycle that includes to observe, document, develop, implement, evaluate and reflect upon an appropriate early childhood educational program for infants and toddlers to understand children’s learning
4 critically analyse the role of the environment, teacher attributes and capabilities, and regulations in enhancing quality education and care for infants and toddlers

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
