Unit aim

Develops students’ conceptual knowledge of the key curriculum areas of science and technology, mathematics, creative arts, language, history and physical wellbeing for children aged from birth to five years. Students will create a portfolio of resources that can be used to develop children’s conceptual knowledge of these areas, with links made to the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (DEEWR, 2009) and the National Quality Standard (ACECQA, 2011).

Unit content

Topic 1: Holistic curriculum in the early childhood setting: an integrated approach to learning.

Topic 2: Key curriculum areas in prior to school settings:

  • science and technology
  • mathematics
  • creative arts
  • language
  • physical wellbeing
  • history

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 articulate conceptual knowledge related to key curriculum areas for children from birth to five years
2 create a portfolio of resources that can be used to develop conceptual knowledge, and experiences, for each curriculum area using an integrated and holistic approach
3 argue, with reference to the literature, how the resources will support the conceptual development of children’s learning of key curriculum knowledge
4 link the chosen resources to the EYLF and the NQS

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
