Unit description

Focuses on the key issues associated with being a professional in the secondary education sector. Emphasis is placed on understanding the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that will be required of students throughout their degree program as well as in their future careers in secondary school settings.

Unit content

Module 1: Becoming a teacher - The role of educators in a secondary school context - Reflecting on personal challenges and goals in becoming a teacher including the need for personal literacy and numeracy - Becoming a teacher, and the teacher's role within the faculty, the school and communities - An introduction to secondary teacher competencies and professional teaching standards. 

Module 2: Curriculum and pedagogy - Major trends in education - historical, contemporary and emerging - Defining and introducing 'curriculum' across the K-12 continuum of learning - Literacy, numeracy and ICT skills in the context of curriculum and how they relate to key learning areas - Defining and introducing 'pedagogy'. 

Module 3: The learning community - Embracing diversity and building positive relationships with young people, their families, and the wider community - Knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for teaching and caring for young people, including child protection - The teacher as a reflective practitioner and lifelong learner. 

** This unit will include three observation day visits to schools.
