Unit aim

Enables students to develop skills and knowledge about the organisational dimensions of social work practice. It will assist students to become ethical, reflective and strategic organisational operators.  Highlights the constraints organisations place on social work’s professional agenda, as well as the opportunities to promote social justice through organisational practice. Emphasises the potential for social workers to contribute to organisational change initiatives, to promote collaborative interdisciplinary practice and to actively seek the participation of service users in decision making about service offerings. 

Unit content

1. Social Work in human service organisations.

2. Theoretical perspectives informing social work practice in organisations.

3. Organisational change.

4. Interdisciplinary practice within and across organisations: communication, coordination and collaboration. 

5. Decision making, risk and accountability.

6. Supervision, leadership and management.

7. Experiencing organisations: service user perspectives.

8. Ethical issues and organisational practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 explain the role of social work in organisations
2 draw upon multiple organisational theories to analyse human service organisations and the social work role
3 critically reflect on the unique role of social work, practising ethically within an interdisciplinary context within and across organisations
4 identify ways in which the voice of service users can be heard and reflected in the operation of human service organisations
5 identify the role of supervision and theories informing leadership and management

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
