Unit aim

Develops students' knowledge and skills in mental health practice, adressing psychosocial health and well being accross the life cycle. Dominant discourses and constructions of mental and physical health are covered with a critical awareness of the issues inherent in using deficit models.  The unit is co-designed with people with lived experience of mental illness.  

Unit content

1.  Health and well being across the life cycle from a person in environment perspective.

2.  Understanding attachment relationships, life transitions,  gender idenitity and sexual orientation. 

3. Examining  the impact of socio-economic status, life opportunities, loss, grief and trauma  on the mental and physical health and well being of individuals, groups and communities.

4. Adressing psychosocial health and well being accross the life cycle.

5.  Social Work and the statutory context of mental health practice.

6. Exploring modes of intervention for social workers.

7.  Learning from the lived experience of service users.
