Unit aim

Provides students with opportunities to apply knowledge and skills developed throughout the Bachelor of Speech Pathology and demonstrate Entry level competency in relation to Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS 2011).

Unit content

Students will complete two professional placements of supervised speech pathology practice. Each placement will equate to approximately 24-30 full days of practice typically across a 5 or 6 week period.

One placement will be intended to be predominantly focused on working with adult populations and the other placement will be intended to be predominantly focused on working with child populations.

Placements will be intended to provide students with direct experience across the range of practice areas of speech pathology (speech, voice, language, fluency, swallowing, and multi-modal communication), however the nature of experiences available will vary from placement to placement.

Placement will be available across a variety of different settings including rural and remote communities.

Within each placement, students will work under supervision of at least one clinical educator. Students' performance within each placement will be assessed using COMPASS as a means to assess clinical competence across the Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS Revised 2011, Speech Pathology Australia).

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
