Unit aim

Increases students' knowledge concerning characteristics, aetiology and consequences of adult neurogenic communication disorders. Students develop a theoretical knowledge base pertaining to frameworks for describing aphasia and associated appraisal and intervention strategies. Communication disorders associated with traumatic brain injury and right hemisphere damage are explored. Students also learn about intervention strategies that involve family and inter-professional teams.

Topic 1: Characteristics and aetiology of adult neurogenic communication disorders. 
Topic 2: Subtypes of aphasia. 
Topic 3: Communication in adults with right hemisphere damage. 
Topic 4: Communication in adults with traumatic brain injury. 
Topic 5: Frameworks for describing aphasia. 
Topic 6: Consequences of neurogenic communication disorders according the various frameworks. 
Topic 7: Types of assessments suitable for appraising adult neurogenic communication disorders. 
Topic 8: Analysing clinical data. 
Topic 9: Interpreting clinical data. 
Topic 10: Tailoring a variety of intervention approaches and clinic materials for adults with particular communication profiles. Topic 11: Alternative service delivery models. 
Topic 12: Strategies that involve families and inter-professional teams.

6 Illustrate ways of tailoring intervention for adults with particular communication profiles, alternative service delivery models and strategies that involve family and inter-professional teams.
7 Establish goals for multimodal assessment and intervention and demonstrate ways of implementing such intervention and measuring outcomes for people with language and literacy disorders.
