Unit aim

Increases students’ knowledge and pre-clinical skills for appraising and providing intervention for adults and children with motor speech or swallowing disorders. Students learn about mechanisms underlying dysphagia, dysarthria and dyspraxia of speech, associated symptoms and related assessment and intervention options.

Unit content

  1. Neuro-anatomical and neuro-physiological perspectives of speech and swallowing and associated problems.
  2. Underlying conditions and mechanisms linked with dysarthria, dyspraxia and childhood apraxia of speech.
  3. Underlying conditions and mechanisms linked with dysphagia
  4. Characteristics of speech in dysarthria and dyspraxia and possible consequences from an ICF perspective.
  5. Speech assessments and analyses for describing motor speech disorders.
  6. Purpose and process of clinical examination of motor speech disorders and swallowing disorders.
  7. The phenomenon of motor control and its development.
  8. Principles and practices involved in motor learning and the relevance to intervention for motor speech disorders.
  9. Intervention approaches for motor speech disorders and swallowing disorders.
  10. Augmentative and alternative communication options for children with motor speech disorders.
  11. Intervention plans for adults and children with motor speech and swallowing disorders.
  12. Evidence base and outcome measures in relation to speech and swallowing disorders in adults and children.

2 Identify underlying conditions and mechanisms linked with dysarthria, dyspraxia, childhood apraxia of speech and dysphagia and the potential impact of these disorders.
3 Differentiate characteristics of speech in dysarthria and dyspraxia.
4 Explain the purpose and process of clinical examination of motor speech disorders and swallowing disorders.
5 Explain principles and practices involved in motor learning and the relevance to intervention for motor speech disorders.
6 Formulate a treatment plan and appropriate outcome measures based on evidence, for an adult and a child with a motor speech disorder and an adult with dysphagia.
7 Establish goals incorporating multimodal intervention and demonstrate ways of implementing such intervention for adults and children with speech and swallowing disorders.
