Unit aim
Prepares students for speech pathology practice for working with adults with swallowing difficulties as a consequence of a range of structural and/or functional impairments. The unit also develops knowledge and skills related to speech pathology practice of the management of swallowing and feeding disorders in non-complex paediatric cases.
Unit content
The unit content will be broadly divided into two modules:
- Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in children
- Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in adults
Both modules will address issues related to:
- normal anatomy, physiology, and neurology associated with swallow function;
- the impact of health conditions on swallowing and feeding;
- signs, symptoms, risk factors, and prognoses associated with swallowing and feeding disorders;
- speech pathology assessment of swallowing and feeding disorders;
- speech pathology interventions for swallowing and feeding disorders;
- application of principles related to client-centred practice, inter-professional practice, ethical practice, and evidence-based practice
