Unit aim

Prepares students for speech pathology practice when working with adults with acquired disorders of language and cognitive-communication. The unit will promote holistic, ethical, and inter-professional management of clients by applying principles of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.

Unit content

The unit will be broadly divided into two modules:

  1. Language and aphasia
  2. Cognition and cognitive-communication disorders

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 analyse, interpret, and report speech pathology assessment data gathered from clients with acquired language and/or cognitive communication impairments
2 plan and justify speech pathology interventions and their implementation for clients with acquired language and/or cognitive communication impairments
3 demonstrate assessment and/or intervention procedures for working with clients with acquired language and/or cognitive communication disorders

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
