Unit aim

Introduces students to physical laws and the application of these laws to the mechanics of motion.

Unit content

  • Relevant aspects of the academic skill of numeracy
  • Describing motion using linear and angular kinematics
  • Linear and angular kinetics
  • Balance, stability and equilibrium
  • Machines and free body diagrams
  • Energy, work and power
  • Linear and angular momentum, impulse, impacts and collisions
  • Fluid dynamics aero- and hydrodynamics

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 apply the academic skill of numeracy in relevant mathematical operations
2 explain and apply concepts related to kinematics, kinetics, balance and machines
3 explain and apply concepts related to work, energy, momentum, impulse and fluid dynamics
4 integrate and apply musculoskeletal functional anatomy with biomechanical concepts as a whole in examples of human motion.
