Unit aim

Introduces students to marine professional development, science history, science practice, science philosophy and marine management practices. This will give students a sound knowledge of the marine sciences.

 

Unit content

  • Science philosophy and history through time with an emphasis on marine sciences.
  • Marine science practice, e.g. animal ethics, the publication process, selecting reviewers and their addressing comments, writing proposals and conference talks
  • Professional development, e.g. grantsmanship, job applications, lecturing, grey literature, career paths, and science communication
