Unit aim

Provides students with the opportunity to apply learning from other units in the course to psychological practice. The first of two psychology practica develops autonomy, responsibility, and a level of independent practice in the profession of psychology. In this unit, students apply psychological knowledge and skills, consistent with current relevant ethical and legal frameworks, inter-professional and mental health practice standards, while developing inter-personal and inter-professional skills in a psychological setting.

Unit content

This unit includes a one week residential prior to commencement of practicum.

  • Introduction to psychological collaborative practice, including legal and ethical obligations relevant to public safety and that of psychologists and inter-professional practitioners
  • Psychological assessments and treatments which may include interviewing, case formulation, treatment planning and evidence-based therapeutic intervention   
  • Attendance at and participation in supervision meetings, including receiving and responding to feedback
  • Instruction and guidance in the choice of assessment instruments, the development and evaluation of psychological case formulations and action plans, and the construction of reports.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 apply foundational skills required to conduct psychological interviews and assessments
2 apply foundational skills to analyse, interpret and report information to develop case formulations, including how to manage risk
3 demonstrate and critically reflect on effective communication, interpersonal skills, cultural responsivity, and ethical and professional practice with clients, colleagues, inter-professional practitioners and other key stakeholders
4 demonstrate understanding of the foundational skills required for the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based psychological interventions

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. apply foundational skills required to conduct psychological interviews and assessments
