Unit Summary
Unit aim
Covers respect for cultural diversity, cultural self-awareness, ethical practice, professional communication and the core counselling and interviewing skills essential for psychological practice. Key foundational ethical, legal and professional competencies are taught including a working knowledge of the APS Code of Ethics. Students will learn culturally-responsive communication skills, and engage with cultural beliefs around mental health and well-being, including their own and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are covered.
Unit content
- Foundations of applied ethics and ethical decision-making models (APS code of ethics)
- Legal frameworks and ethical principles in psychological practice
- Core counselling skills
- Verbal and written communications skills for psychologists
- Different cultural perspectives on mental health and wellbeing and culturally-responsive practice
- Reflective practice
