Unit aim

Introduces areas of psychology and sociology relevant to health practitioners. Provides the theoretical underpinning required to achieve understanding of the dynamics of human behaviour and the structure of the social world. Major paradigms and methodological approaches will be presented in order to encourage an awareness of how these disciplines apply theory and research methodology.

  • Understanding the social gradient and its impact on health
  • The social concept of gender and its impact on health
  • The social concept of age and its impact on community health
  • Prominent Australian cultures and health status
  • Individual health behaviour
  • Motivation for behaviour change
  • Individual personality and its impact on health
  • Learning health behaviours through the life span
  • Healthcare practitioner stress and coping strategies

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate appropriate academic skills in relation to library-based research, academic writing, academic integrity and critical thinking
2 demonstrate an understanding of various psychological and/or sociological topics
3 identify and critically appraise psychological and/or sociological theories in relation to wellbeing, health and illness
4 apply psychological and/or sociological theories to individual health contexts

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
