Unit aim

Explores notions of power and ethics, which underpin political action and social movements, providing an opportunity to examine the dynamics that create social change. Contemporary social movements are examined so that students can evaluate their significance and assess the value of social movements to their own lives.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 articulate and understand how social movements evolved, how they operate, and their relationship with both democracy and contentious politics
2 critically evaluate the political opportunities and constraints that give rise to contentious politics and social movements
3 critically analyse the political impact of social movements and their possible futures
4 competently utilise a wide range of research methods and critically evaluate the validity of sources

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
