Unit description

Students work collaboratively with patients and others to plan and implement evidence-based practice with considerations for patient centred care and informed decision-making. This unit builds on previous work integrated learning units with increased independence in the delivery of patient management, including communication and quality assurance. Students will engage in peer leadership and mentorship, and work to maintain safe workplace practices and protect and enhance safety.

Theory

  • Using technology to enhance practice
  • Communication, report writing and application of the ICF in patient management
  • The role of health professionals as leaders and mentors
  • Quality assurance in treatment planning and wider clinical practice applications
  • Techniques for supporting patients to autonomous, informed decisions
  • Culturally responsive, ethical practice and clinical reasoning principals

Practicum

  • Communicating with patients and providing targeted assessments.
  • Assessment, treatment planning and implementation of intervention programs
  • Measuring outcomes, reviewing programs and writing reports
  • Identifying and applying effective discipline specific and inter-professional practice principles, including leadership, peer mentoring and communication practice.
  • Communication of their own clinical reasoning, and applications of cultural responsiveness and ethically minded practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

assess patients and plan, develop and implement appropriate interventions

critically appraise patient interactions and outcomes of interventions

create and implement plans for intervention that take into consideration evidence, cultural responsiveness and ethical practice principles

communicate professionally with patients and relevant others to deliver effective podiatric practice
