Unit aim

Builds upon student learning from Lower Limb Medicine I. Introduces students to the disease processes and pathology behind advanced foot and ankle conditions. Introduces students to concepts of population health as it relates to the foot and ankle.

Unit content

Topic 1: Population health and the foot and ankle

  • Evidence in practice
  • Understanding the differences in ageing
  • Communication, multidisciplinary and inter-professional care

Topic 2: The adult foot

  • Assessment and management of common adult foot conditions
  • Case presentations

Topic 3: Gerontology

  • The ageing body
  • The ageing foot

Topic 4: Normal and abnormal paediatric pathology

  • Common paediatric pathology of the lower limb
  • Assessment and management of common paediatric conditions

Topic 5: Sports medicine for the lower limb

  • Clinical signs and symptoms
  • Assessment and management of sporting injuries
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical rationale for intervention
  • Multidisciplinary care, communication, case management and referral
