Students are introduced to the podiatry profession in a clinical setting and the associated roles and responsibilities of patient care. 

Unit content

Topic 1: Practising within the SCU student clinic

  • Rights and responsibilities of student practitioners
  • Reflective ethical practice of podiatry

Topic 2: Application of legal and regulatory frameworks pertaining to infection control

  • International and Australian standards and guidelines
  • SCU Health Clinic policies in infection control
  • Applying these standards and guidelines to practice, including:
    • Aseptic techniques in podiatric practice
    • Sterilisation protocols
    • Environmental safety
    • Medical waste protocols

Topic 3: Workplace health and safety

  • Understanding Legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Understanding SCU Health Clinic and University policy
  • Ergonomics
  • Reporting Injury
  • Duty of Care

Topic 4: Privacy and Confidentiality

  • The Privacy Act
  • Freedom of Information Act

Topic 5: Communication and referral
