Unit aim

Introduces students to models of care and business management concepts related to diabetes services.  The scope of practice of the diabetes educator is explored, along with the role of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA).  Students complete 40 hours of clinical practicum within an approved diabetes service to consolidate their learnings.

The unit learning outcomes address elements from Domain 2 (Education and Counselling), 4 (Management and Administration), and 5 (Leadership and Advocacy) of the National Competency Standards for Credentialled Diabetes Educators.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 analyse the role of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association and apply its legal and ethical framework within the scope of practice of the diabetes educator
2 apply evidence based practice to diabetes self-management education and support
3 apply principles of service planning and management to the delivery of diabetes education in a variety of settings

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
