Unit description

Further develops the skills of the student osteopathic clinician in supervised clinical practice including application of theoretical concepts to case history taking, differential diagnosis, clinical reasoning, patient management plans and treatment strategies informed by the best available evidence. Teamwork and critical analytical skills are further developed in a team-based research project.

Unit content

  • Provides 132 hours of clinical practice under the supervision of one or more osteopathic clinical educators and 24 hours of grand rounds
  • Professional behaviours in osteopathic student clinic
  • Integrating theory and practical skills
  • Reflective practice: reflecting on the patient’s  context
  • Further developing clinical reasoning
  • Research project: literature review, aligning methodology to research question, ethics in research

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate skills in taking a full patient case history at an intermediate student practitioner level in an evidence-based context

perform a full patient physical examination in an evidence-based context at the level of an intermediate student practitioner level

implement and explain the diagnostic process at the level of an intermediate student practitioner level

develop and explain a management plan, including for chronic pain and neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation and commence a safe, rational and evidence-based series of osteopathic treatments

demonstrate professional behaviour and attitudes, including efficient time management and recording skills

critically reflect on the patient’s experience of osteopathic practice

work collaboratively within a team on a research project: critically analysing relevant literature and aligning methodology to research questions
