Unit aim

Provides students with a deepening understanding of the diagnostic theory and methods in primary care medicine, with particular focus on aged care, rehabilitation studies and exercise as therapy, psychology and counselling, pain management and paediatrics. This unit also aims to develop advanced clinical reasoning while integrating the osteopathic principles and practices into patient care. Simulated clinical cases are used to develop clinical reasoning skills.

    • Psychosocial issues in osteopathy practice
    • Mind-body medicine
    • Cognitive approaches in pain management
  • Principles of rehabilitation studies, and lifestyle management plans
    • Review of principles of exercise prescription
    • Advanced diagnostic skills
    • Rehabilitation in osteopathic practice
  • Principles of aged care
    • Osteopathy in aged care
  • Principles of Paediatrics
    • Osteopathy in paediatrics
  • Principles of Integrated care

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 identify and explain the signs and symptoms and diagnostic processes of disease identification in patient presentations in the aged care and paediatric domains
2 describe models of pain management, including the bio-psychosocial model
3 demonstrate competency in clinical counselling, applying knowledge of the psychological influences on health
4 demonstrate competency in constructing appropriate lifestyle management plans for patient based on the principles of rehabilitation
5 critically explore the integration of the osteopathic concept of health and disease with the diagnostic process
6 demonstrate rational clinical reasoning and problem solving skills in the development of management plans for simulated patient cases.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
