Unit aim

Provides a comprehensive overview of nutritional science and its relationship to physical performance. The unit enables students to gain basic skills in nutrition education when related to sport and exercise.

  1. Introduction to sports nutrition
  2. Introduction to nutrition education of athletes and exercising persons
  3. Defining and measuring energy
  4. Energy systems and exercise
  5. Carbohydrates for sport and exercise
  6. Proteins and amino acids for sport and exercise
  7. Fats for sport and exercise
  8. Weight and body composition
  9. Water and electrolytes for sport and exercise
  10. Micronutrients for sport and exercise
  11. Disordered eating and exercise patterns in athletes
  12. Special populations

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 critically discuss nutritional requirements for exercise and for recreational and elite athletes
2 apply nutrition concepts to enhance physical performance, recovery, health maintenance and rehabilitation within an exercise scientist's scope of practice
3 develop a nutrition education resource for athletes or exercising persons
4 demonstrate proficient skills in visual presentation and skills in professional writing

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
