Unit aim

Explores nutritional science in a disease based context, including how the disease process influences nutritional status. Conditions in selected body systems (e.g. immune, endocrine, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal), neoplastic disease and mental health are reviewed, along with evidence-based nutrition interventions. Students are also introduced to the fundamentals of nutrition education and counselling to promote behavioural change in individuals.

Nutrition care process

  • Review of the nutrition care process
  • Nutritional assessment: Nutritional status; Biochemical assessment; Data integration and interpretation aligned with evidence/standards
  • Nutrition diagnosis: Identification of nutritional problem(s) and contributing factors
  • Nutrition intervention: Nutrition education and counselling to promote behavioural change

Exploration of nutritional science from a disease-based context

  • Selected body systems and/or conditions/states
    • Immune: Inflammation, infection, food allergy vs. food intolerance, HIV/AIDS
    • Endocrine: Thyroid, prostate, PCOS, menopause, other
    • Musculoskeletal: Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout
    • Gastrointestinal: Diseases of the upper and lower GI tract
    • Neoplastic disease
    • Mental health
  • Interaction of diet/nutrients, lifestyle and the environment in disease aetiology for noted conditions
  • Influence(s) of the noted conditions on nutritional status (e.g. nutrient intake, assimilation, requirements and losses)
  • Evidence-based nutrition interventions for the conditions studied
  • Case studies in Tutorial on-site
