Unit aim

Students develop skills in physical, psycho-social and cognitive nursing assessment and beginning-level nursing interventions inclusive of medication administration and management. Practice in nursing laboratory sessions and simulated rehearsal prepares students to conduct holistic-focussed health assessment across the lifespan.  As part of this unit students will complete 120 hours of professional placement.

Unit content

  • Care planning and documentation
  • Psychosocial assessment (including mental health component)
  • Physical assessment (across all ages):
    • Integumentary assessment and wound care
    • Cardiac assessment and vital sign assessment (including Blood Glucose Levels)
    • Respiratory assessment, oxygen therapy, peak flow and administration of inhaled medications
    • Nervous system and sensory (ears, eyes and nose)
    • Cognitive assessment
  • Bowel care and elimination, specimen collection, managing urinary catheter
  • Patient safety
  • National inpatient medication record system
  • Quality use of medicines - Principles of drug administration
  • Numeracy and drug calculations
  • Drug administration - non parenteral
  • Drug administration - parenteral and insulin administration
  • Preparation for PEP2

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a range of physical, psychosocial and cognitive assessment skills to inform nursing interventions to provide person-centred care and that are cognisant of cultural sensitivity and awareness
2 develop an understanding of the use of evidence-based nursing to inform nursing practices
3 demonstrate medication administration in a safe and competent manner
4 use a range of data management techniques to document holistic care

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
