Unit aim

Explores the roles of the mental health professional in the 21st century, within the context of mental health outside of, but articulating with tertiary services.  Learners will critically explore the growing role and opportunities for their discipline within the Non-Government and primary health sectors and will deconstruct consumers’ experiences of care within those settings.

Unit content

  • Key stakeholders and funding streams within primary care and non-government contexts
  • Relationships between the recovery and medical models and experienced consumer care
  • Stepped care and integrated care pathways: barriers, enablers and required capabilities
  • Vulnerable mental health consumer groups within the community
  • Lived experience and its impact on therapeutic relationships and within professionalised roles.

1 identify and critique the policy and funding context of mental health service provision in primary mental health care and non-government organisation sectors Intellectual rigour

3 deconstruct stepped care, its barriers and opportunities and its impact on consumers and their families Intellectual rigour
4 analyse the range of interventions within primary health settings and the impact of these interventions for at least one vulnerable group within the community Cultural competence
5 critically discuss the role of ‘lived experience’ of mental illness and distress in informing policy and practice of mental health care including mutual self-help, peer support and advocacy Knowledge of a discipline
