Unit aim

Exposes learners to a critical exploration and practical application of the core contexts of mental health within the Australian health care systems. Contemporary policy issues, core professional values, the self within therapeutic relationships, foundational skills within mental health professional clinical practice that build toward collaborative recovery and evidence-based mental health practice will be covered.

Unit content

  1. Overarching mental health policy and legislation impacting on daily clinical practice and experienced interventions
  2. The therapeutic relationship and effective use of self 
  3. Emotional Intelligence, empathy and compassion
  4. Bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment and formulation
  5. Clinical supervision 

Learning outcomes

1 analyse contemporary mental health policy, key legislation and professional standards and how they influence mental health practice and the experience of care Intellectual rigour

3 critically explore the concepts of empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence in the provision of mental health care Communication and social skills
4 construct a clinical / case formulation drawing on psychotherapeutic theory, extant research and clinical reasoning which effectively addresses the holistic needs of the individual Intellectual rigour
5 design an individualised plan for professional development which enables critical reflection in and on practice and the development of interpersonal capabilities for successful professional practice in the mental health field. Lifelong learning
