Unit aim

Learners explore the integrative approaches to mental health. These evidence-based, patient-centred approaches are applied to a range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, drug and alcohol dependence, and dementia. Learners are equipped with the knowledge and skills to recognise acute mental health emergencies and implementing mental health first aid. The value of the therapeutic relationship in mental health is also examined.

Topic 1: Overview of mental health

Topic 2: Classification and major causes of functional and organic psychiatric pathology

Topic 3: Integrative management of mental health conditions 

Topic 4: Integrative approaches to mental health

Topic 5: The therapeutic relationship in mental health

Topic 6: Acute emergencies and mental health first aid

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
