Unit aim
Builds on students' technical skills in their particular discipline from the unit Specialist Studies III, and challenges and extends their artistic understanding. Provides the opportunity for students to develop their directions as musicians within their discipline via intermediate critique, analysis and application of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements of a range of repertoire is also explored.
Unit content
Topic 1: Introduction to a variety of intermediate repertoire and intermediate technical etudes and scale syllabus.
Topic 2: Technical exercises to establish complex melodic lines and harmony (polychord voicing and four-note voicings, and arpeggios).
Topic 3: Memorisation, chart interpretation and improvisation over harmonic progressions and one chord modal approaches.
Topic 4: Introduction to intermediate harmonic progressions, rhythmic development techniques and repertoire development.
Topic 5: Intermediate improvisation (melodic development, cyclic progressions, creative scale application 'inside and outside', rhythmic applications). Scale syllabus from a variety of genres.
Topic 6: Intermediate stagecraft skills including for example, presentation, band volume, personal dynamics, time management and communication skills.
Topic 7: Scale and chord syllabus (all relevant modes, voicings and from a variety of genres). Intermediate rhythmic techniques related to soloing.
Topic 8: Application of improvisation skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 9: Continuation of approaches to improvisation in all genres and technical application.
Topic 10: Application of melodic skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 11: Application of rhythmic skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 12: Exam preparation: for intermediate performance.
