Unit aim

Develops intermediate level musicianship skills and knowledge specifically in relation to theory, aural, keyboard and digital musicianship skills (including notation software and digital audio workstation software). Students participate in lectures, tutorials and lab sessions building on skills and knowledge developed in the unit Musicianship II.

Unit content

  • Four-note and five-note chords built from the major scale
  • Chords built from 'church' modes and minor scales
  • Basic chord voicing and voice-leading principles
  • Chord progressions
  • The concepts of plurality and diatonic chord substitution
  • Secondary dominant and diminished chords
  • Tritone substitution
  • Analysing key areas
  • Common drum and bass patterns
  • Keyboard skills: building basic melodic, harmonic and rhythmic skills and knowledge
  • DAW skills and techniques, working with samples and MIDI.

5 Sing arpeggios, recognise, dictate and compose chord progressions based on advanced harmonic vocabulary
6 Perform intermediate level melodic, harmonic and rhythmic patterns on the piano keyboard
7 Demonstrate basic competency in the use of MIDI tracks and instrument samples in DAW software.
