Unit aim

This unit explores advanced concepts in sound reproduction relating to a 'live music performance' context. Through a balanced program of theoretical and practical face to face learning sessions, this unit will examine specific concepts in sound reinforcement and amplification and compare to established Music industry practice. Additionally, this unit aims to develop the student's skills in the technical operation of various types of equipment utilised in a variety of live music contexts including concerts, recording studios, video broadcasts and radio studio environments.

Unit content

Historical overview PA system hardware development.
WH&S in relation to electricity and power distribution systems
Sound theory
Production planning
Sound design
Analog and digital technologies used in live sound production
Concert pre-production
Spectral sound analysis
Contemporary live sound practices used in the music industry
Variable gain amplifiers and time modifiers
Sound reproduction for other media (social media, television, film, multimedia installation)

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
