Unit aim

This unit explores audio-visual synchronisation specifically related to audio for film and visual data file formats, in both the analog and digital domains. Past, present and future synchronisation technologies and practices are explored with the major focus on digital integration of audio and visual media synchronisation in current creative contexts. Practical workshops will be conducted on the utilisation of sound FX, dialogue replacement and music composition in multimedia presentations.

Module A History and the technology of synchronisation

Topic 1. Overview of the history Need for time-code
Topic 2. Magnetic film & video technology, Dolby, Timecode LTC and VITC, dropframe, PAL, NTSC, EDL,  controllers and synchronisers
Topic 3. Computer synchronisation, ProTools, Avid, post conform OMF, Final Cut, iDVD, iMovie, Quicktime, compression standards, data storage and transmission

Module B Theory of sound and visual image

Topic 1. Categories of visual image and music
Topic 2. Role of music in filmTopic 3. Collaborative processes in screen and multimedia projects
Topic 4. Analytical techniques in determining the creative outcomes of Multimedia and screen audiovisual collaborations

Module C Lab classes for practical aspect (12 weeks)

Music program specifics as it relates to synchronisation (5 × 1 labs)
