Unit aim
Rehearsing and playing live in ensembles is the key focus of this unit, providing the opportunity for students to achieve pre-professional level skills and technical proficiency through ensemble performance in a variety of contemporary music genres (e.g. alt. rock, electronic dance music, global fusion, improvisational, Latin and original compositions).
Unit content
Topic 1: Ensemble practices and etiquette. Repertoire selection and groove playing and rhythmic studies.
Topic 2: Chart writing, reading signage and transcription skills. Repertoire selection and rehearsal strategies.
Topic 3: Rehearsal techniques. Ensemble balance, timbre and intonation. Repertoire selection and rehearsal. Pre-professional level harmonic studies. Application of harmonic studies to selected repertoire.
Topic 4 Application of pre-professional level groove studies to selected repertoire. Repertoire rehearsal.
Topic 5: Improvisation techniques related to selected repertoire and effective rehearsal techniques.
Topic 6: Pre-professional level improvising and soloing techniques. Application of improvisation and soloing techniques to selected repertoire. Repertoire rehearsal.
Topic 7: Application of scale harmony for improvisation and soloing. Repertoire rehearsal.
Topic 8: Application of accompanying studies to selected repertoire. Repertoire rehearsal of other two songs.
Topic 9: Pre-professional level stagecraft, presentation and audience engagement. Application of stagecraft skills to repertoire rehearsal and performance. Repertoire rehearsal of other two songs
Topic 10: Preparation and rehearsal of five songs for ensemble exam
