Unit aim
This unit develops foundational performance skills through the analysis and critique of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements of contemporary repertoire and the application of foundational performance techniques.
Unit content
Topic 1: OH&S including equipment placement - Technical exercises to establish a practice routine - Approaches to chart reading, writing and importance of transcription
Topic 2: Introduction to repertoire (e.g. blues, electronic, funk, hip hop, reggae, pop, rock, rhythm & blues) - Chords (all functions of the dominant 7th & 6/9). Instrumental role and function
Topic 3: Scale syllabus (harmonic minor, major and minor modes) - 8th and 16th note syncopation
Topic 4: Repertoire research and development - Effective music journaling and critique
Topic 5: Harmonic progressions and guide tones - Rhythmic elements and rhythmic elements for independence
Topic 6: Scale syllabus (melodic minor and derivatives) - Dynamic and rhythmic focus 8th and 16th note syncopation
Topic 7: Approaches to intermediate improvisation concepts (cyclic and harmonic progressions, creative scale application, rhythmic applications)
Topic 8: Extension to scale syllabus (Lydian, Dorian, Mixolydian, Pentatonic and Blues scales)
Topic 9: Syncopated grooves and role in ensemble
Topic 10: Continuation of approaches to improvisation (Cyclic and harmonic progressions, creative scale application, rhythmic applications)
Topic 11: Exam preparation: Intermediate stagecraft and ensemble leadership skills
