Unit aim

With this unit, candidates will be able to assess the impact of ICT, environmental and strategic choices upon organizational design options for management. Focus is given to the man/machine interfaces and the array of design options open to management outside of organizational isomorphism. Planning theory; project management; matrix design; uncertainty/complexity; and professional innovation in complex organizations will be canvassed.

Unit content

Topic 1 Introduction to the unit. 
Topic 2 The time and motion, managerialist paradigm. 
Topic 3 Functionalist design principles in the US and the UK. Issues in departmentalism - function; purpose; geography; time and cyberspace. 
Topic 4 Social engineering and managerial utopias - toward psychological contracts. 
Topic 5 The abuse of the expert/staff function/symbolic analyst. Early forays into project management. 
Topic 6 Matrix organisations. 
Topic 7 Re-engineering, outsourcing, off-shoring, partnerships and management consultants. 
Topic 8 Globalization; hierarchies, networks; clans and professionalism. 
Topic 9 Cyberspace dreams; virtual organisations. 
Topic 10 Neo-liberalism; the end of history - the end of organization design; back to the future.
