Unit aim

Aims to develop an understanding of the employment life-cycle such as branding image and attraction and ending with employment transitions and termination. Builds on initial themes identified in the unit Managing Organisations in relation to the employment relationship.

Unit content

Topic 1: Examining the role of the manager in effective HRM. 
Topic 2: Human resource planning 
Topic 3: Understanding the role of job analysis in attracting suitable employees. 
Topic 4: Understanding employee selection. 
Topic 5: Human resource development (HRD)/ training, coaching and mentoring 
Topic 6: Career planning and development, employability, skills, boundary-less careers. 
Topic 7: Examining how human resources are rewarded. 
Topic 8: Understanding performance management systems/appraisal. 
Topic 9: Human resource information management systems. 
Topic 10: EAP/OHS/affirmative action/EEO/anti-discrimination/workplace relations & industrial awards.

3 Identify past and current methods of training in the workplace, Human Resource Development (HRD), performance management systems and performance appraisals.
4 Identify current best practice methods of career and succession planning, coaching, mentoring and extending the working lives of employees.
5 Discuss employability, skills, graduate attributes, boundary-less careers, employment transitions in the public/private sector, SMEs and not-for-profit.
