Unit aim

Examines the social, cultural, political, economic, technological and biophysical environment and conditions that shape tourism planning and policy development. Key themes explored in this unit are relationships between the state, business and society; the scale and the characteristics of each particular environment milieu in which tourism planning takes place.

Unit content

It is vitally important for managers in the international travel and tourism industry to develop knowledge and understanding of the environments of tourism. Tourism 'environments' can encompass the social, political, cultural, economic, technological and biophysical. Students of this unit will learn about the interactions between elements of tourism and these environments and the implications these interactions have in real world situations. This unit is structured around eight topics as follows:

Topic 1 Overview of Tourism Planning Environments
Topic 2 The state, institutions and actors in tourism planning environments
Topic 3 Historical factors influencing tourism planning environments
Topic 4 Trends, perspectives and practice in tourism planning environments
Topic 5 Tourism planning and policy
Topic 6 National, Regional and Local destination planning environments
Topic 7 Discursive policy making
Topic 8 Skills and knowledge for tourism planning.
