Unit aim

Provides the basis for the midwife to facilitate and support the woman as decision-maker in optimising the health of the woman and her baby in the postnatal period. Students will discuss the psychophysiological responses in the postnatal period.

Unit content

  • Midwifery care for the well woman and her baby during the postnatal period
  • The psychophysiological responses for the mother in the postnatal period
  • The psychophysiological responses of the neonatal in the postnatal period
  • Medication and drug calculations

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 discuss the midwife’s role as facilitator to support women in decision making that optimises the health and wellbeing of the new family

3 discuss the psychophysiological responses in the postnatal period
4 demonstrate proficiency in drug calculations.
