Unit description

Further explores concepts introduced in early units and promotes the translation of theory into the practice of midwifery for well women and babies during pregnancy, labour and birthing as well as the immediate postnatal period. This unit prepares the first-year midwifery student to practise in accordance with the principles of best practice, safety, quality and partnership.  It provides the theory required to ensure the student has the capability to provide care for the well childbearing woman and her baby/ies.

Unit content

  1. Evidence in relation to pregnancy, labour and birth and the immediate postnatal period
  2. Facilitate informed choice during pregnancy, labour and birth and the postnatal period 
  3. Decision-making, consultation and referral guidelines to ensure safety and quality in health care
  4. Assessment and care of the woman and her baby during pregnancy
  5. Assessment and care of the woman and baby during labour and birth
  6. Assessment and care of the woman and baby during the immediate postnatal period

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss evidence-informed midwifery care for the well woman and her fetus/baby across the childbearing continuum

discuss the midwife’s role in facilitating informed choice during pregnancy, labour and birth, and the postnatal period

identify the midwife’s role in decision-making, consultation, and referral guidelines in facilitating safety and quality in health care

explore and discuss the importance of continuity of care and woman-centred care when working with the woman and her fetus/baby across the childbearing continuum
